Tonight was the night. The plan would finally be set in motion.

Loki smiled wickedly at the thought, but it faded for a brief moment when he looked down at the green ribbon he had tied around his wrist. Part of him wished he could see her one last time, but he couldn't think about that now.

Later that evening, Loki descended the steps to the banquet hall, dressed as sharp as his silver tongue. He wore a tuxedo styled jacket over a white collared shirt and black pants and shoes. He wore a green scarf around his neck that matched his cloak and a smirk that could make anyone's knees weak.

As he approached the bottom of the steps, a familiar figure caught him off guard

There was a girl that was standing with her back to him, but he knew exactly who it was. He watched her chat with an older woman, and when her shoulders shook with laughter, he couldn't hold back the smile that crept over his lips.

The woman facing him noticed him first. She smiled one of the girliest smiles he had ever seen and turned back to the blonde to whisper something to her. Loki saw her muscles stiffen and her ears go red, and he clutched the staff tightly as he caught his breath. When she turned to face him, the world seemed to stop.

Loki's heart pounded in his ears as she stared up at him. He couldn't deny it. She was absolutely beautiful. She wore a strapless, knee length red and black dress that flowed out from her waist down. It made her look like a little fairy. To top it off, she wore a black choker styled necklace with a red rose on it.

He began to move closer to her, and realized he was wearing her ribbon. He hid it under his sleeve, not wanting to have to return it so soon.

"Sir, we're almost ready."

The voice snapped Loki back into reality. His heart pounded harder. He had to get her out of here.

Loki rushed toward the girl and was greeted by the smile that made him feel as though he would melt. He gripped her by the shoulders firmly.

"You have to listen to me. Things are going to get very hectic and very dangerous very quickly, are you listening? You have to get out of here as soon as you possibly can. Do you understand?"

"But," she began.

He cut her off by wrapping the scarf that he was wearing around her neck. He placed his hands on her face and gently caressed her cheeks. He didn't want to say goodbye. They stared at each other for a moment before he spun her in the other direction by the shoulders.

He pulled her in closer to whisper, "Go quickly, now, and no matter what happens, don't look back!"

He pushed her in the direction of the exit and watched her hesitate. His heart pounded and he clenched his fists so tight he thought that he was going to make his hands bleed. Finally, she ran towards the door and he felt like he could breathe again.

"We're ready, sir."

"Good."

Violent chaos erupted in the banquet hall just moments later. In the back of his head, Loki hoped the blonde was safe.

He watched in amusement as the humans scattered like roaches. He took on his Asguardian robes and helmet and cornered the pathetic humans. He commanded them to kneel and although he spoke to them, he was secretly looking for the girl.

"Now see, isn't this better? This is your natural state, you understand. You were meant to be ruled!"

An elderly man stood up in protest.

"Not by men like you."

"There are no men like me."

"There are always men like you."

Loki's anger flared. His eyes seemed to be on fire and he raised his staff.

"Let your elder be an example to you, ladies and gentlemen!"

Loki missed the clicking of high heels that came from the side, but wished he had recognized the footsteps. It was too late, now.

He watched in horror as a body was thrown in front of the old man. The humans scattered again, but Loki's focus was no longer on them. He teleported to her and caught her by the shoulders. He tore his helmet off so that he could see her better. Her back was badly burned along with some of her dress and hair. He carefully turned her over and searched for any sign of life.

But there was none. Her eyes wouldn't open and he could feel no pulse. Blood dripped down the side of her mouth and he dropped to his knees, still holding onto her.

"No! Please! Open your eyes!"

It finally occurred to him that he had never even bothered to learn her name.

Loki pressed her to his chest and cried out in agony. He didn't want this to happen. He didn't mean for this to happen! He clenched his teeth at the thought that she would never laugh or smile again.

Captain Steve Rogers and Tony Stark showed up moments later, but weren't sure of what to do with this situation. Tony went to grab Loki, but was stopped my Steve.

Loki let out a shaky breath and laid her down carefully. There had to be a spell he could use!

When nothing he tried brought any life back to the girl, he stood up. There was a dark look on his face.

"Just get it over with," he said through clenched teeth.

For once, the God of Mischief had no will to fight.
